GRAN TURISMO CAR REVIEWS

4WD Challenge!

The ultimate battle of 4-wheel drive sports cars!!

Description: B License required. Now we've got Polyphony's first attempt at an all 4-wheel drive series!!! The idea here is these front-engine cars can grab, understeer, and oversteer.

This is truly one of the more annoying series of GT1. Constant punting into our rear bumpers means we cannot perform delicate slowing, with early brakes and careful turn-in points. They also take every opportunity to miss their own braking points, and then fully broadside us from the left or the right. It's more like bumper cars than Gran Turismo. Seems some of the PD devs were planning ahead for GT2.

If we do happen to get into the lead, maintaining it now means near-perfect cornering. The smallest of mistakes causes then to pounce all over again.

Otherwise, most of the competition is competitively balanced. Only the 457 horsepower Mitsubishi GTO stands out, blowing away the others down straights if it's gotten through traffic. I won't recommend outright banning this car if it shows up, as it is possible to beat it with the suggested power. Bans are therefore a judgment call for anyone reading this.

Parts:
Tires: Semi-Racing. Do some experimenting with whatever car is being driven. Pay attention especially to the rear tires, and whether they're sliding or losing lateral grip. This is the enemy of AWD cars. Any sliding means lost speed. Soft/Soft combinations often work best for these, though there may be some models which Soft/Hard are better.

Brakes: Sports Brake Kit (Normal can be tried for sportiest models).

Suspension: Sports or Semi-Racing

Stabilizers: Soft or Medium

Gear Type: Normal for most cars, at all three tracks. Super-tall gears might require a closer box.
Clutch: Twin Plate
Flywheel: as needed

Payment:
Pole Position: 1,500
First Place: 5,000
Championship: 10,000

Prize: '95 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV, yellow with yellow rims.

Qualifying: Add 10 horsepower for every position below 2nd. The competition in this series can otherwise eat us alive with the punting and bonking.

Race: Notice there isn't as much difference between qualifying power and racing power at Trial Mountain. Everyone in this series has somewhere between 300 and 450 horses, roughly, and we're going to be doing the same. PD did a terrible job setting qualifying times at the other two tracks, as we'll see shortly.

Otherwise, the boxy cars in this series also have herding together like a pack of buffalo. They crows around US too, which really gets annoying. Use less power if more challenge is needed, but I'm sticking to the numbers above.

Add an extra 10 horsepower if the 457 horsepower Mitsubishi GTO shows up, unless you're that confident.

--------------------------------------------------

Trial Mountain II

Qualify: 7.87
Racing: 8.17

Optimum Qualifying Time: 1:32.769

Maybe it's me, but Trial Mountain is the easiest reversed track in my opinion!

----------------------------------------------

Grand Valley Speedway

Qualify: as much power as possible.
Racing: 7.97

Optimum Qualifying Time:

Qualifying on pole or even 5th place is similar to the FF Challenge at Route 11: basically impossible at this track. Maybe a full-powered Mitsubishi GTO can do it. Otherwise, I'm usually 6 seconds behind the others at this track.

---------------------------------------------

Special Stage Route 5 II

Qualify: as much as possible.
Racing: 7.44

Optimum Qualifying Time: Lol

Again, don't bother too much with qualifying. This track uses another bogus lap time set by some phantom car, nearly impossible to beat unless your ride's packing hundreds more horses than my current '93 Subaru sedan with Stage 3 power is packing.

Since this is a new track, rarely used in GT4 and never used in GT5, it helps to do several laps of practice. Get in the habit of looking at the banners which hang overhead, and placards sticking out of walls to determine braking and turning-in zones.
